What Once Was...

What once was bliss, now saturnine -
Our lifelong song now clipped, to whine
A hundred leagues; what whale-art soars
As oil on ancient ballads pours?

Yet, what behemoth isn't cursed
To suffer conquest at its worst?
To harpooneers, our death is prized -
Our right to roam by man despised.

Soliloquys we jet to air
For we, of ancient tome, are rare -
Our spiracles, our founts untamed
Are dry to forces unashamed.

What once was free, now stipend-pieced -
To north, to south, to west, to east -
A quaintly fading choir of myth,
We'll sing hereon, to die herewith.
