Shadow Puppets - Wayang Kulits

Wayang Kulit, is an Indonesian shadow puppet play, which uses intricately made and beautifully painted, gilded leather puppets. Although only the puppets' shadows are seen by the audience, the performances are fascinating. The stories told by shadows are often from the spirit world and are full of symbolism and mysticism.

A single, highly skilled puppeteer controls hundreds of puppets; plays out the roles of different characters with a different voice for each character; and leads the traditional musicians.

Wayang kulit plays can play for several hours or be several days long.

Kecak Dance

The kecak is a ritual dance which was created in the early 1930's for the movie "Island of the Demons" by the German painter and intellectual Walter Spies. The dance combines the chorus of the "Sanghyang" trance dance with a dance story from the epic "Ramayana."

It is extremely impressive with its circular chorus of sometimes over 100 bare-chested male singers.

Built around a sacred spring, Tampak Siring. An inscription dates the spring all the way back to 926AD; and there are fine carvings and Garudas on the courtyard buildings. The temple and its two bathing spots have been used by the Balinese for over a thousand years for good health and prosperity; as the spring water really does have the power to cure! Regular purification ceremonies also take place here.

Tampak Siring artists produce marvellous bone and ivory carvings. Both sites open daily. By public transport from Ubud, catch a bemo north to Tampaksiring from the junction in Bedulu, which is south-east of Ubud.

A little off the main road in Tampaksiring is Gunung Kawi with its group of large stone memorials cut into cliffs on either side of a picturesque river valley. It is believed to date from 11th century, one is of Bali's most impressive sights.

Tanah Lot Temple

The royal Taman Ayun temple was built by one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century. The temple stands on top of a huge rock, surrounded by the sea and is one of Bali's most important sea temples. Tanah Lot pays homage to the guardian spirits of the sea.

Ancient rituals pay homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. Poisonous sea snakes found in the caves at the base of the rocky island are believed to be guardians of the temple, standing virgil against evil spirits and intruders.

The best time to see Tanah Lot is in the late afternoon when the temple is in silhouette.

Over a thousand years old, Besakih Temple is known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) Besakih is the biggest and holiest of all the Balinese temples. Named after the Dragon God believed to inhabit the mountain, it's said to be the only temple where a Hindu of any caste can worship.

Eighteen separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups surround the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. To the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The mountain top setting gives it an almost mystical quality.

Steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines, dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. There are are number of temples but many of their inner courtyards are closed to visitors. If travelling on your own, try reach Pura Besakih before 9am, when many tourist buses start to arrive, so that you can take in the lovely temple in the quiet Balinese morning.

WHERE TO EAT IN DENPASAR
There are a variety of restuarants in Denpasar offering a good choice of food to suit a variety of tastes at reasonable prices. Restaurant Hong Kong serves a good selection of Chinese and Indonesian dishes but prices are a little on the high side in comparision with other places in the area. Mie 88 with a slightly less extensive menu, is good value for money. Pondok Melati serves good, resonably priced seafood, but the setting is slightly noisy. If your looking for something pedas -spicy, visit Ayam Goreng Taliwang, that serves Lombok style food. Many of the shopping centres in the area have places to eat and there are several fast food places for those fast food addicts, McDonalds at the NDA department store, Wendy's and Pizza Hut at the Bali Mall and KFC at Matahari's and there is no shortage of Dunkin Donut outlets in the city.

Bali needs no introduction, artists and tourists have been coming to this island since the 1920s, when air travel was in its infancy and sea travel was considered an extravagance. If you are seeking beauty and peace of mind, and the enjoyment of virgin palm-fringed beaches, a landscaped tapestry of green paddies and towering mountains, Bali is the place to be. Bali is located just off the eastern tip of Java, from which it is separated by the Bali Strait. Immediately to its east is the island of Lombok, across the Lombok Strait. On its north and south side, the island is flanked by the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean, respectively. The island of Bali occupies an area of approximately 6,000 square kilometers and lies on a latitude of 8ฐ south of the equator.

The southern part of the island is covered by wide and fertile lowlands and mountain foothills. Many small rivers, which have their headwaters in the mountains in the center of the island, flow through those plains and empty into the Indian Ocean. The southern part of the island is the most populous, with the most important towns and cities located in this area: Gilimanuk, Negara, Jembrana, Tabanan, Denpasar, Gianyar, Bangli, Klungkung, and Amlapura. Along the narrow coastal lowland strip in the north are Singaraja and its port, Buleleng. The city of Denpasar is the provincial capital of Bali; the island of Bali constitutes a province of Indonesia, and is administered by a governor. The province of Bali consists of eight regencies, each administered by a regent. They are Badung (capital, Denpasar), Buleleng (Singaraja), Gianyar (Gianyar), Bangli (Bangli), Klungkung (Klungkung), Karangasem (Amlapura), Jembrana (Negara), and Tabanan (Tabanan).

Hills and mountains fill the central part of the island, running along an east-west axis. The highest are the mountains Agung (3,142 m), Abang (2,150 m), Bratan (2,270 m), Merbuk (1,386m), and Patas (1,474 m). Mount Batur, Gunung and Agung are still active. Agung, whose last eruption in 1963 devastated vast areas in its vicinity. Cool and beautiful lakes are found in these central highlands, such as Lake Bratan and Lake Batur. Rivers, such as the Badung and the Kelandis, flow from these mountains, both of them through Denpasar. The Agung river originates in Mount Penulisan and empties into the Badung Strait. The Burus and Banyumala rivers flank the town Singaraja in the north and empty into the Bali Sea.

Like most other regions in Indonesia, Bali has two seasons: a dry season, lasting from April to September, and a rainy season, lasting from October to March. Those two seasons are separated by a transition period of unpredictable weather. The dry season is hot during the day, but cool during the night. The average daily temperature in Bali ranges from 28ฐ-30ฐ centigrade in the lowlands. In the towns and villages in the mountains it is about 10ฐ centigrade. The most pleasant time of the year is between May and September.

One other element that has since the beginning contributed to the island's great popularity among visitors is the apparently inborn friendliness of its people, and the ease with which they communicate with others. With a population of approximately three million people and a total land surface of 6,000 square kilometers, Bali is one of the most densely populated territories of Indonesia. Bali's plains are very fertile and about two thirds of the people of Bali are engaged in agriculture. Irrigated rice fields, often laid out in neat terraces carved out of the mountain slopes, and other seasonal crops are found from the highlands down to the lowlands. In the north of the island, the people plant coffee, coconut and fruits. The forests throughout the island are well preserved, and cover most of the mountaintops.

The people also rear cattle and pigs and Bali's beef is said to be first-rate. In the coastal regions an important source of income is fishing whether it be in the sea or fish farm ponds. Tourism is another important source of income for this island paradise. Crafts, painting and sculpting in particular, are another source of revenue in which many Balinese are engaged. Art pervades the daily life of the Balinese. Almost every village has its artists, many of whom have achieved worldwide acclaim. Bali is one of the few places in the world where one can see a cowherd boy sculpting a piece of wood or coconut shell while watching his herd. Bali's music and dances have fascinated discriminating audiences in prominent art centers in many countries around the world.

Before the arrival of Hinduism in Indonesia, the people of Bali, like others in Indonesia, adhered to the ancient Indonesian animist belief, which holds that many objects in nature are inhabited by spirits, either good ones or bad. It does not seem exaggerated to say that Bali today, constitutes a museum of the Hindu culture in Indonesia, because it is the only place in which the creed is still actively practiced, albeit in a form that is strongly infused with local elements, as it must have been in Java and elsewhere too, in the past. The Hindu Balinese faith still touches every aspect of life on the island. This can be seen every day, in ceremonies as well as in the outlook and attitudes of people. From birth through childhood, adulthood, to old age and the moment of death, the Balinese marks the passage of his life with rituals and ceremonies. In its various expressions, all this can be observed daily in Bali, sometimes in colorful ceremonies, but often in little details such as the presence of flower offerings in tiny baskets in taxis, or in the burning of joss sticks in hotel lobbies.

GETTING AROUND IN MEDAN
North Sumatra's provincial capital, Medan, is one of the most prosperous centers of business and commerce on the island. The city is one of the three main international gateways to Indonesia and hence is easily accessible not only from other major points in Indonesia, but in the world.

By Air:
Daily flights by Garuda Indonesia are available from Jakarta, Palembang, Padang and Aceh. The city is also served by direct flights from Singapore.

By Sea:
Pelni ships, regularly visit Medan's port Belawan, on the Malacca Strait. The KM Kambuna connects North Sumatra with Surabaya and Ujungpandang, as well as Jakarta.

By Land:
Buses ply the route between Jakarta and Medan over Palembang, Jambi and Padang. Bus connections are also available with Padang, over Bukittinggi, Pekanbaru and Dumai. The network links the North Sumatra provincial capital with other major cities in Java as well. One of North Sumatra's biggest tourist attractions is Lake Toba, 176 kilometers southeast of Medan. The second-biggest city is Pematangsiantar, 128 kilometers south of the provincial capital.

Diving at Pandaan Beach
A seaside resort with white sandy beaches and a fishing village 11-km from Sibolga. Pandaan boasts magnificent views of the Indian Ocean and fisherman sailing to the open sea. The restaurant serves great fresh grilled fish.
Climbing-Bohorok
For the adventurous, a trip to Sumateras inland wilderness, crossing rivers and climbing steep, jungle-clad hills is a must. South of the Mount Leuser National Park, the Rehabilitation Centre for Orang Utans at Bahorok is open to the public.

ATTRACTIONS

Berastagi
This picturesque hill town in the Karo Highlands, 70km from Medan, is dominated by two volcanoes: Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak. At 1300m (4260ft) above sea level, the climate is pleasantly cool and the atmosphere refreshingly relaxed. Travellers come to Berastagi to experience the culture of the Karo Batak people and to go trekking. There are guided treks into the Gunung Leuser National Park and to surrounding volcanoes and attractions.
Lake Toba-Parapat
Lake Toba is the heart of Batak country, the largest lake in Southeast Asia with a surface area of about 1,145 sg. kilometres, and the deepest lake in the world, over 450 meters deep. The town of Parapat is the main tourist resort and lies on the shores of the lake. The Batak Toba and Batak Simalungun peoples of Parapat are happy, easy going people, known for their lively and sentimental love songs. The great island of Sumatra the third largest in the archipelago and fifth largest in the world (roughly the size of California or Sweden), is Indonesia’s most important territory. In just about every way, strategically, economically and politically, Sumatra has always formed a pivotal "backbone" for the nation. Second among the major islands in population numbers but first in exports (principally oil, natural gas, rubber, tin and palm oil, but also tobacco, tea, coffee and timber), it stands at the crossroads of Asia.

Like Java, Sumatra is formed by a longitudinal range of mountains, a double fold in the earth’s crust with a central trough through which towering volcanoes have thrust upwards. This so-called Bukit Barisan Range extends for about 1,600 kms (1000 miles) in a northwest-southeasterly direction rising at several points above 300 meters (1000 feet). There are about 90 volcanoes in this range, 15 of which are active, but unlike those in Java and Bali they frequently deposit material of an acidic nature which does not improve the fertility of the surrounding soils.

The majority of Sumatrans live in the long range of undulating foothills, plateaus, river basins and highland lakes along the island’s spine, where they make a living as subsistence cultivators. Two major ethnic groups the Minangkabau and the Bataks, and a number of minor ones (the Gayo, Alas, Kubu, Kerinci, Rejang, Lampung and others) can be identified. The Minangkabau are settled people who are related to the Malay of the east Sumatran coast and are thought to be descended from an inland. The other great highland people of Sumatra, the Bataks, inhabit a fertile volcanic plateau, roughly oval in shape, that covers much of the northern central Sumatra.

Ferrari vows to take 'passion' elsewhere

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is convinced the Italian marque can find the same level passion in other racing series if it leaves Formula 1.

The Maranello-based squad, the most emblematic team in the sport, said on Tuesday it will pull out of Formula 1 if the budget cap regulations introduced by the FIA for 2010 stay in place.

The threat was followed today by one by Renault, who also said it will reconsider its position.

Ferrari said on Thursday it had received "numerous" messages of support from its fans, to which di Montezemolo responded on the car maker's official website.

The Italian said if Ferrari quite F1, it would continue to race elsewhere with the same level of enthusiasm.

"I want to thank you personally for the numerous messages of support we received from all over the world over the last hours on our website and via email," di Montezemolo wrote.

"It is important to know that we can count on the support of our fans all over the world and that our fans completely share the motivations, which brought us to take such a decision.

"If we were forced to leave the Championship we were part of over the last 60 years of our history and where we set all the records in terms of victories, it is because they want to change the nature of its founding values.

"If it really was like that, then I have to say that our cars will race in other competitions, where - and I am absolutely convinced about that – they will find the enthusiasm and the passion of millions of fans, following us in every corner of the world. Racing is part of Ferrari's DNA and this is something that will never change."

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa said the idea of having a two-tier championship was "absurd".

"I understand the motivation, why the company got to this point," said Massa. "The idea of having a championship with two velocities, with cars, which for example are allowed to have flexible wings or an engine without a rev limiter, is absurd.

"We've already seen this year that the rules' uncertainty not only led to a lot of confusion for us involved, but mainly for the fans. Imagine what might happen with what has been set up for 2010.

"For a driver racing a Ferrari in Formula 1 is a dream and I made mine come true. Since I was a child Ferrari has been the synonym for racing for me; that's why I'm convinced that even if the Scuderia is forced to leave Formula 1, there will be other competitions, where it will be possible to admire the Reds on the track."

Team-mate Kimi Raikkonen added: "It's difficult to think of a Formula 1 without Ferrari. When I drove for McLaren the Scuderia from Maranello was the benchmark, the competitor you had to be compared with. Since I arrived here I understood that it is much more than just a team, it's a legend, perpetuated via its road and racing cars.

"I always had the passion for racing with everything with an engine and I always thought of Formula 1 as the pinnacle of motor sports, in terms of competition and technology. Obviously if there really were rules like the ones set by FIA, it would be difficult to imagine a Formula 1 we had until today.

"I can't imagine drivers racing each other on the track with cars built according to different rules; that wouldn't be good for the sport itself or for the fans. If that should happen, it would be too bad and I understand that a Company like Ferrari is thinking about racing somewhere else."

The Renault Formula 1 team has joined Ferrari in threatening not to enter the 2010 championship over the introduction of budget cap rules.

Just a day after the historic Italian marque said it will not enter F1 in the regulations remain unchanged, French manufacturer Renault has issued a statement saying it is "reconsidering its entry" in next year's championship.

Renault made it clear also that it was unhappy about the way the budget cap rules have been introduced by the FIA without consulting the teams, saying any such changes should be carried out in a progressive manner.

"There is frustration that FOTA's constructive proposals, including major cost saving measures to be adopted progressively between 2009 and 2012, which were carefully constructed by FOTA members, have been completely ignored without any form of consultation by the FIA with the teams," said Renault in a statement.

"It should be stressed that FOTA has set the same, if not lower, financial objective as the FIA, but Renault strongly believes that this must be introduced through a different procedure agreed by all parties.

"The decision of the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) to introduce two sets of Formula One technical regulations for the 2010 Formula One season has caused the Renault Group to reconsider its entry in next year's FIA Formula One World Championship.

"Renault also believes that it is paramount that the governance of the sport is coordinated with a spirit of consultation with all parties (FIA, FOM, FOTA) in order to achieve a better balance between the costs and the revenues. Renault is also of the firm view that all entrants in the World Championship must adhere to and operate under the same regulations."

Renault is the third Formula 1 manufacturer to officially threaten to leave the sport over the changes following Toyota and Ferrari.

Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz also said his teams will not participate next year if there were two sets of rules.

Renault's team principal Flavio Briatore said his team refused to accept the FIA's "unilateral governance" of the sport.

"Our aim is to reduce costs while maintaining the high standards that make Formula One one of the most prestigious brands on the market," he said. "We want to achieve this in a coordinated manner with the regulatory and commercial bodies, and we refuse to accept unilateral governance handed out by the FIA.

"If the decisions announced by the World Council on the 29th of April 2009 are not revised, we have no choice but to withdraw from the FIA Formula One World Championship at the end of 2009."

Renault team president Bernard Rey added: "Renault has always considered Formula 1 as the pinnacle of motor sport and the perfect stage to demonstrate technical excellence.

"We remain committed to the sport, however we cannot be involved in a championship operating with different sets of rules, and if such rules are put into effect, we will be forced to pull out at the end of this season."

BMW to run improved KERS in Turkey

BMW Sauber is planning to runs an improved KERS system at the Turkish Grand Prix next month, team boss Mario Theissen has said.

Theissen claimed the new KERS will have a better packaging that the team hopes will allow drivers to achieve a better balance in their cars.

The new package was designed in conjunction with the aero upgrades introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, but the team decided not to run it in order to be able to focus entirely on the aerodynamic improvements.

"We have developed the aero package and in parallel we are developing a new KERS package which fits the new aero package," said Theissen.

"These were on the same schedule but we have decided not to combine it because it was clear to us that the new aero package alone would eat up all the time we have on Friday and Saturday morning to get it sorted, or almost sorted.

"And if we then had a new KERS at the same time, it would have been too much. We are planning to have it in Istanbul."

The team will not be running KERS at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Theissen says it would not have any benefits.

"It was clear from the beginning of the season that it would not give us the benefit in Monaco," he said.

Fry: Barrichello will move on from Spain

Brawn GP's CEO Nick Fry is convinced Rubens Barrichello has already put the Spanish Grand Prix disappointment behind him and is already determined to win his first race of the season in Monaco.

Barrichello looked like the favourite to win the Barcelona race after taking the lead at the start, but the veteran Brazilian lost out to team-mate Jenson Button, who switched from a three- to a two-stop strategy to score his fourth win in five races.

The Brazilian driver admitted he was very disappointed with the result, which also triggered suggestions about the use of team orders, something Brawn has denied.

But Fry reckons Barrichello has already moved on from the Spanish race.

"My experience of Rubens is that he will be very disappointed without a shadow of a doubt but give it 24 hours, he will be arriving in Monaco chipper and as determined to win," said Fry.

"Someone doesn't do F1 for as long as he has without being really determined, and the next one will be really determined to win that one."

Barrichello said after the race that he saw no point in thinking about the disappointment.

"The race was finished half an hour ago and that's the way it went," he said. "There's no way I'm going to be crying here and saying I should have done this or that. It's in the best interests of myself to learn what went wrong today because I had the ability to win the race but I didn't and this is a full stop.

"Jenson is on a flyer and he's doing very well. I think this weekend was really good for me because I worked quite hard on all the set-up and everything."

Rosberg says his future remains open

Nico Rosberg says he remains open about his Formula 1 future, the German admitting he is already considering his options for 2010.

The Williams driver had said earlier this year that the form of his team during 2009 would be crucial in his decision on whether to continue at the British squad or move somewhere else.

Rosberg said in February that he wanted to be in a race-winning car by 2010 "at the latest."

Although Williams has enjoyed a promising start to the season, the German driver has scored just 4.5 points in the first five races.

Rosberg admits he feels at home at Williams, but he insisted he wants to be in car that can win races.

"I'm looking at it now. I'm trying to build an image in my head about what possibilities are for next year," said Rosberg when asked by AUTOSPORT about his future.

"That fact is I feel really good in this team. They support me, and we've grown together, so it's a nice feeling here. So it would be nice if I could stay, to develop the car together that would be great."

He added: "It would be great to have one (race-winning car) now, but in F1 there's only two teams that have race-winning machines if anything.

"So you just need to be patient. If you deserve it sooner or later it will come and next year is going to be an important stop for my career.

"I would like to find something which is a good, long-term solution. It's important to get it right.

The 23-year-old said he had been encouraged by the progress made by Williams this year, and he reckons his speed at the Spanish Grand Prix, the first race in Europe, is a good omen for the rest of the season.

"It's very encouraging that we are in this position at this track, because it means that we can definitely compete in terms of development with the other teams and we have a chance to stay where we are or maybe a little bit better for once. So it's okay," he added.

"It's a good platform. They have done a good job with the development to put us in this position again, so it's okay.

"Over the winter they have shown they can build a good car. They've developed well through the first few races. So we'll see."

AUTOSPORT understands Rosberg has already begun talking to other teams to find out what options there are for next year.

Ferrari threatens to leave F1 in 2010

Ferrari has confirmed that it will not enter next year's world championship unless plans for a voluntary £40 million budget cap are changed.

Although the team had expressed private reservations about the rule changes and governing processes for 2010, it finally went public with its intentions in a statement issued following a board meeting at Maranello on Tuesday afternoon.

"The same rules for all teams, stability of regulations, the continuity of the FOTA's endeavours to methodically and progressively reduce costs, and governance of Formula 1 are the priorities for the future," said the statement.

"If these indispensable principles are not respected and if the regulations adopted for 2010 will not change, then Ferrari does not intend to enter its cars in the next Formula 1 world championship. "

Entries for the 2010 world championship close on May 29, with Toyota and Red Bull's two F1 teams having already announced in public that they will not enter if the rules remain unchanged.

It is thought likely that the other manufacturer teams will also join a 'boycott' of lodging an entry by the deadline - with only the current independents Brawn GP, Williams and Force India outfits set to apply.

As with other teams, Ferrari's main cause of concern is the possibility of a two-tier F1 - which would come into force should some teams adopt to run under budget cap restrictions next year while others choose unrestricted finances.

Regarding the FIA's World Motor Sport Council meeting on April 29 that ratified the 2010 regulations, the Ferrari statement said: "Although this meeting was originally called only to examine a disciplinary matter, the decisions taken mean that, for the first time ever in Formula 1, the 2010 season will see the introduction of two different sets of regulations based on arbitrary technical rules and economic parameters.

"The Board considers that if this is the regulatory framework for Formula 1 in the future, then the reasons underlying Ferrari's uninterrupted participation in the world championship over the last 60 years – the only constructor to have taken part ever since its inception in 1950 – would come to a close."

Although Ferrari is totally opposed to a two-tier F1 system, and has questioned whether or not it is possible for a £40 million budget cap to be introduced next year, the Italian outfit is also concerned about governance of the sport.

As well as being unhappy about the way the rules were pushed through last year, Ferrari thinks there has not been enough consultation with the teams.

"The Board also expressed its disappointment about the methods adopted by the FIA in taking decisions of such a serious nature and its refusal to effectively reach an understanding with constructors and teams," added the statement.

"The rules of governance that have contributed to the development of Formula 1 over the last 25 years have been disregarded, as have the binding contractual obligations between Ferrari and the FIA itself regarding the stability of the regulations."

In light of the developments regarding next year's entry, Ferrari said its president Luca di Montezemolo had been told to look at alternative activities for the racing team.

"Ferrari trusts that its many fans worldwide will understand that this difficult decision is coherent with the Scuderia's approach to motor sport and to Formula 1 in particular, always seeking to promote its sporting and technical values," said the statement.

"The Chairman of the Board of Directors was mandated to evaluate the most suitable ways and methods to protect the company's interests."

Despite Ferrari's strong stance, the FIA said earlier today that it was optimistic a solution to the matter could be found soon. Di Montezemolo is expected to meet with FIA president Max Mosley in the next few days to discuss the situation.

Q. How do you sum up your Spanish Grand Prix weekend?

Timo Glock: It was a tricky weekend and in the end it was really disappointing. We all hoped for a lot more from the Spanish Grand Prix so to finish in 10th place was way below our expectations. Clearly our performance in the race did not meet the high standards we set earlier in the season but we are working flat-out to respond in the next races.

Q. What can you say about the upgrade package the team took to Spain?

TG: The guys back in Cologne worked incredibly hard to prepare several upgrades to the car, and I'm grateful to them for such a big effort. When you see how much work went into this you can really appreciate the dedication and commitment we have. We had some mechanical and aerodynamic upgrades which we tested on Friday. It's a bit different for us this year because of the testing ban, which means we have to try out new parts on Friday when anyway we are pretty busy working on set-up, tyres and strategy. In the end we decided not to use the aero upgrades but we did use some of the mechanical stuff.

Q. Are you concerned that other teams may have made a step forward compared to Toyota?

TG: In Spain we seemed lose a little ground but the team is pushing really hard to develop the car and there are more upgrades coming in the near future. Last year we improved continuously as the season went on and one of our most competitive races was the final one, which proves we have the ability to close the gap on other teams during the season. Obviously it's a challenge and sometimes things don't work out as you expect but we know we have to continue to develop every area of the car because the other teams are doing the same. We have the determination and the potential to do this.

Q. After qualifying in the top six, things looked positive but what happened in the race?

TG: We had quite an aggressive strategy and we were definitely expecting to score points from the third row but unfortunately things went wrong at the start. The car didn't pull away properly so I lost some position, then there was a big mess at turn two involving Jarno, when Nico (Rosberg) squeezed him on to the grass. After that I was stuck behind Nico for the first stint. I could have gone faster but I couldn't get close enough to make a move and, with the strategy I was on, this really hurt my chances.

Q. Was it possible to overtake in the race?

TG: Overtaking was very difficult. Every time I got into the slipstream of Nico my tyres started to go off so I just couldn't get close enough to him. Towards the end of the race I was putting pressure on Lewis (Hamilton) but it was the same situation; I was quicker than him but overtaking was really, really tough. It wasn't just me either, apart from the situation with Felipe (Massa) at the end there weren't many passing moves in the race.

Q. What are your hopes for Monaco?

TG: Obviously the main target is to get back into the points and hopefully fight again for the podium. Personally, I'd like to have a straightforward race weekend because with starting from the pit lane twice and some issues with the weather, you could say I've had an interesting start to the season!

Q. Is Monaco a special race for you?

TG: I really like Monaco but one of my strongest memories from there brings back quite mixed emotions. When I came back to Europe in 2006 to do GP2 I wasn't in the best car and it was a hard start to the season. At Monaco, I fought my way up from 17th to fourth and things finally were looking pretty good for me, but then I had a gearbox problem and had to stop.

That was a real low point and at that moment I seriously questioned if I could ever get back into Formula 1. But, happily for me, on the strength of that performance I was offered a drive at iSport, also in GP2. I finished second in my first race for them and everything changed. The pivotal moment was in Monaco.

Hamilton: McLaren can turn the corner

Lewis Hamilton is still hopeful his McLaren team may find a breakthrough with its car to get him back to the front of the grid, as he pins hopes on new parts lifting his performance for next week's Monaco Grand Prix.

The world champion endured a disappointing weekend in Spain, finishing outside the points as his MP4-24 struggled for speed at the Circuit de Catalunya.

But with the latest raft of car developments due to be introduced in Monte Carlo, Hamilton says he is remaining confident that a sudden leap forward in pace could happen at any point.

"The whole team is working as hard as it can to improve the car and we have some more upgrades coming for Monaco next week," Hamilton said on his official website.

"I definitely think we can turn the corner with this car - I don't think the whole car is wrong, I think perhaps a small issue is triggering a bigger problem somewhere else. And that's encouraging because it means we could hit a breakthrough at any stage.

"We've definitely taken some big steps forward and we've learnt from some of our mistakes too - we're all optimistic for the next few races."

Although hitting out at the pace of his car following the Spanish GP, Hamilton has nothing but praise for the efforts being made at the factory to improve his machine.

"I hope our new modifications give us a huge chunk of downforce," he said. "I know the guys will keep pushing, I'm pushing like crazy, we're all pushing like crazy: when we start winning again, we'll deserve it more than anything because we'll have been through so much to get back there.

"There is a great feeling of solidarity and optimism in the team at the moment, we'll never give up."

Hamilton is sure, however, that until the improvements come he does not have what it takes at the moment to retain the title.

"I'm pushing as hard as ever when I drive the car, they are working like crazy to develop the car but the car is just not where it needs to be for me to defend the title," he said. "But that won't stop us all from fighting hard and pushing to the absolute maximum at every race - because that's got to be our motivation now."

Q. A tough race and no points in Barcelona - were you satisfied with your drive?

Lewis Hamilton: "We're unfortunate that our car is not quick enough at the moment, but that hasn't stopped me from pushing hard in all the races. Even though I didn't finish in the points in Spain, I pushed like crazy throughout the whole race, didn't make any mistakes and got the maximum from the car. As a racing driver, you have to be satisfied with that, and I was pleased with my performance. To finish ninth at a circuit we knew wouldn't suit us wasn't the end of the world.

"Most importantly, it's a big improvement for the guys in the team. I just want to say that the whole team has done a fantastic job - they really have, since I've been in this team I've maybe had one or two reliability issues with the car in 40 races. And touch wood that will stay the same."

Q. You finished in the points in Bahrain but struggled to get into the top-eight in Barcelona - which result do you feel is more representative of the car's performance?

LH: "We knew the Spanish Grand Prix was going to be tough for our car given the results of the test a couple of months ago. We're hoping that things improve greatly from this point onwards as Barcelona is one of the toughest circuits on the calendar for our car. Bahrain was always going to be one of our better races because we could exploit KERS and the car's handling through the slower corners. I think we can finish in the points regularly but we'll continue to struggle at some of the faster circuits. But hopefully we can introduce the necessary performance upgrades to make us competitive everywhere."

Q. Given the pace of the front-runners, what are your thoughts on retaining the title?

LH: "I'm pushing as hard as ever when I drive the car, the are working like crazy to develop the car but the car is just not where it needs to be for me to defend the title. But that won't stop us all from fighting hard and pushing to the absolute maximum at every race - because that's got to be our motivation now."

Red Bull Racing's principal Christian Horner says his team has had to redefine its goals for the season following its maiden win in China.

Sebastian Vettel led team-mate Mark Webber to a one-two in Shanghai, as Red Bull confirmed its position as one of the favourites to fight for the titles this year.

The team from Milton Keynes has been on the podium in all races since winning, and Hornet admits the goal now is to catch championship leader Brawn.

"The team is on a high after the result in China, which was backed up by Sebastian's podium in Bahrain and Mark's in Barcelona," Hornet told the official Formula 1 website.

"China was a milestone. We have the first pole position out of the way and have the first win out of the way and that automatically changes our focus.

"Our focus now is very clearly to close the gap to the Brawns - and Barcelona has shown that we have done that - and we still have a lot more development potential open to us. The car is performing very well, the team is performing exceptionally well, and we are going in the right direction."

Horner insisted the team is working hard to introduce a double-decker diffuser, a task that it's harder for Red Bull because of the design of the car's rear suspension.

Despite that, Horner is hopeful it will be run in the next race in Monaco.

"It is a big challenge for us to incorporate a new floor given the characteristics of the RB5," he added.

"Probably it is more difficult than at other teams, but be assured that the guys back home in Milton Keynes are working very hard on a solution and hopefully Monaco will be its first race."

Trulli says Spain slump a one-off

Jarno Trulli has urged his Toyota team to remain optimistic about its chances for the rest of the year, despite enduring its worst race of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Neither Trulli nor Timo Glock scored in Barcelona last weekend, having also slipped down the order in qualifying just two weeks after locking out the front row in Bahrain.

But despite the setback, Trulli thinks it too soon to draw a firm conclusion that rival teams have overtaken the Japanese manufacturer in the development race.

"I would say I am a little bit careful," Trulli told AUTOSPORT. "It is just a one off. We have to stay optimistic because so far the car has been very good and competitive.

"It was not the case during the Spanish weekend, but a fifth place was still possible honestly talking. Now the thing is we have to stay focused and develop the car, and that is the main issue. We need to keep developing the car if we want to keep fighting."

Trulli is unsure about what to expect for the next race in Monaco, with the former winner not confident that the characteristics of the TF109 will be well suited to the tight twists and turns of the street circuit.

But he thought it pointless to worry about what may happen before the track action begins next Thursday.

"I live race by race," explained Trulli. "Races have to be raced, you cannot predict or try to say what will happen. You can be more or less optimistic, but once you get in the car on Friday and Saturday you can say in a way, and we knew here on Friday that we were not competitive.

"I will be good in Monaco if I have the car, it is as simple as that. I head there with confidence, and obviously we need to see how the car behaves during the weekend. It is tough to say for sure though, as Monaco is always unpredictable."

When asked if the slow speed turns at Monaco would suit the Toyota, Trulli said: "I think it is a weakness at the moment, but I hope to be wrong."

Fry: Button's experience gives him edge

Jenson Button's experience will give him the edge if the world championship fight turns out to be a battle between himself and Sebastian Vettel.

That is the view of Brawn GP's CEO Nick Fry, who thinks that Button's 158 race tally - plus the up and down form he has enjoyed in his nine full seasons in F1 – may prove an advantage against his Red Bull Racing rival who is starting his second full season.

"I think anyone who has been in F1 for as long as Jenson has, and been through what he has been through, is much, much stronger than someone who is younger," Fry told AUTOSPORT.

"I think Sebastian is an absolutely sensational driver but I think Jenson's experience counts for something."

Fry believes that Button is revelling in the situation he finds himself in at the moment because of the troubled years he has had at BAR and Honda in recent years.

"I think that Jenson has just sort of continued to mature in a fairly gradual way," said Fry. "He has had a lot of war wounds along the way but that makes him even stronger now.

"He is very relaxed in himself and I think you've seen here in Spain again when he gets the bit between his teeth and wants to win then these days he is pretty formidable. He is someone who is 29-years-old now, he has a lot of experience, he is more comfortable in his own skin – and that makes a huge difference to his inner confidence."

Although Button has opened up a comfortable lead at the top of the title standings, Fry says Brawn is remaining cautious about its championship hopes.

"I think that our view is that it is still one race at a time," he said. "It is still very early in the year and it is great where we are, but I don't think anyone inside is thinking too much about that.

"It is do the best possible job – and that is what we are doing all along. Through the survival of the team we have learned to take one step at a time, and we really just continue with the same philosophy.

"Every day is a new day and we try and do our best. The guys are just doing a great job and there is a huge enthusiasm. They are getting into the swing of things now.

Q & A with FIA's Tony Purnell

The main topic of conversation in the Spanish Grand Prix paddock was not the fantastic on-track battle for the world title, but the possibility of manufacturers quitting the sport over their discontent about the imposition of a budget cap.

Toyota and Red Bull both confirmed in public they would not lodge entries to the 2010 championship if the rules did not change, while other teams also expressed similar sentiments in private.

Yet despite the unhappiness, the budget cap remains perhaps the best solution to both cutting costs and attracting new competitors into the sport.

As talks between the teams and the FIA continued in Barcelona, AUTOSPORT spoke exclusively to the governing body's technical advisor Tony Purnell about the budget cap - why it has been chosen, why he believes it is best for the future and where the situation goes from now.

Q. Can you explain what your role has been in getting us to the point we are at with budget caps?

Tony Purnell: It has evolved. More than two years ago the FIA were very unsettled with the teams' expenditure. While F1 has tremendous value, there is always a limit on sustainable cost and it looked like we had accelerated past that limit.

We had all kinds of debates about it, and Max asked me to think about ways to really address the problem.

Formula 1 is a unique mix of sport and business. It always has been. The sport should have two elements - a competition between immensely clever engineers and immensely talented drivers. It should be that easy.

On the business side, it has to be profitable. If it is a flourishing business, people will want to come into it. We started looking at how many new teams there had been. Where were the Frank Williams's and the Ross Brawns? The FIA wanted to encourage new talent to come in to the sport.

Max asked for a paper on cost reduction and it always seemed to boil down to two ways of going forward. If it is cost reduction you want, you either hit the root cause - restrict the money supply. Or just constrain people so that the return on investment diminishes – which means technical restrictions, or what I would call process restrictions in the way you go about things. In extremis this meant going to standardisation.

The FIA pushed hard with budget capping a year ago and had a lot of support within the teams, but we ran into political difficulties. It was not on the philosophy, but on what was the right number. It was either too high for half the grid, or too low for half the grid.

Then FOTA came along and we were involved in discussion with them. They were very good people, very good engineers, but you could see that their heart was not really in restricting themselves but it was what they had been told to do.

Then Max asked, what is the DNA of F1? What is F1 all about? It should be to encourage technical competition, to encourage innovation like KERS. Now, not everybody has made it to the grid with KERS, but that was part of the technical challenge. There are some really, really good systems out there, but is it wrong that the technical challenge was so great that some people haven't quite made it? I would say absolutely not. Is it wrong that we have got this wide array of solutions to the opportunity? No, it's brilliant.

But the thing that has really struck us is that since we announced KERS we have seen the development of flourishing companies like Flybrid Systems, who didn't even make it onto the grid. Why? Because of the catalyst of F1.

We've got BMW, Mercedes and Magneti Marelli, the people who have really pushed KERS, all saying that this has improved the knowledge of a hugely relevant automotive technology. And what is more, that knowledge is going into production exercises – they are very enthusiastic. We also have Williams who have backed massively clever innovation with a business attracting real interest – and they haven't made it to the grid either. KERS has confirmed our thinking that innovation is what F1 is all about.

It is certainly what many of us grew up loving about F1. There was always that feeling that that exciting new technology was going to come in future.

So, faced with these two philosophies we decided not to go down the standardisation route. Then we looked at the budget cap again. It produces a really great competition because it is all about cleverness, the real DNA of F1. It also enables us to allow for wider scope in the technical regulations, so we can throw in these new technical challenges like KERS.

It also frees us up to focus the sport on sustainability. The current financial crisis has produced an undercurrent that if we don't change F1 to present a public image of technical relevance and economic and environmental sustainability then we are going to get into difficulties.

The FIA feels that we have to introduce a new F1 car that faces the challenges of the decade to come. And yet, how do we do that when the automotive industry is facing a meltdown? Certainly when you talk to someone in the automotive sector, they say don't use the word downturn. It is an outright depression.

In the F1 of the past decade, introducing a new powertrain meant trooping up into a manufacturer's boardroom and saying: "A fraction off a billion dollars please!" I don't think anyone in this pitlane, brave as they are, has the nerve to do that today.

If we can create an acceptance of a financially controlled environment, then all these things become possible. We can change F1 and evolve it, and F1 is about change.

We can make F1 so that entrepreneurs can come in and, if they do a good job, they can become established. I think we can change the image of F1 away from something that has served it very well for the past decade but is now out of tune with the coming years. With all of these things on the plus – many agree that is where we want to get to.

Even chatting to the people who are unsure, they like the vision. They say: what you are trying to do, we don't want to push back against that. The perceived difficulty is all about the transition.

Q. And you think it vital that something is done immediately, to pre-empt financial problems that lay ahead because of a crisis that may be bigger than some people realise?

TP: I was recently told by one of the leading sponsorship agencies – Don't listen to any of the arguments that lowering the costs will chase sponsors away. Sponsorship is about value. F1 offers tremendous value and will continue to do so.

The other thing is that we have a group of potential sponsors who are very attracted to F1, but don't like its profligacy.

To make change needs courage, resolve and leadership. And it is where a committee often runs into trouble. Everybody wants what is good for them, but you need someone to see beyond that and cut through the self interest and say this is what we need to do. That is exactly what Max is doing.

Q. FOTA made a proposal last year to the FIA of a budget cap, but at a different level to the £40 million. So it appears they are in favour of the concept, but it's the level it is set at that is the complication. Can you explain why you have settled on the £40 million figure?

TP: We started off by doing an investigation into what is the minimum cost to put a car on the grid under the present rules.

Then we went a little bit leftfield and looked at Le Mans cars, A1GP, GP2 and that sort of thing. How much did it cost as a development programme? The absolute lowest figure was £30 million.

We announced that figure and we got an immediate response from lots of prospective people – some of whom we know are very serious.

Then there was a lot of lobbying, as always goes on, and then there was also this feeling that we had worked out this minimum figure, but we wanted to allow the technology and the innovation side to flourish. So we needed a budget above that minimum, and that is, in my way of thinking, why there is an extra £10 million. So there is the base level, plus £10 million to improve the car and get it into the area of engineering competition.

Q. But do you not concede that it will be difficult for a big manufacturer team to go from a budget of £150 million this year to £40 million per annum in just six months, whereas if the figure goes much higher new teams will not be interested in coming in?

TP: Yes. The thing is a tremendous balancing act. We want to attract new teams and my feeling is that if we pushed it much more, the number of new teams, which has already thinned going from £30 million to £40 million, would just disappear. So, the objective of attracting new teams, we cannot lose sight of it.

On the other hand, there are the manufacturers needing to make big cuts. Well, the FIA is the regulator and we have to see the bigger picture. Ask anyone to study the ownership of F1 teams at the moment, and the main automotive companies, and they are facing a deep crisis. And amid that economic environment, if you are right at the top of the company, you think we have got to change the spend and cost profile. What is the most high profile spend? F1.

It is a time for difficult decisions to be taken. Sitting dazzled in the headlights won't work. So, for the big teams, they face a massive challenge and whatever you do is a risk. But doing nothing is an unacceptable risk.

Q. What about the risk of a two-tier championship, and the claims that it will destroy F1?

TP: It is all about transition. I think there are certainly many members of the media and many people in the paddock who say, where you want to get to is really admirable. But how do you get from A to B? The option route is a means to do it. In the medium and long term we expect things to converge. In the meantime, certainly if all the FOTA teams think that two tiers is wrong, then we absolutely invite them to go one way – problem solved.

Q. You had discussions with some teams last weekend. What has the feedback been like?

TP: The major issue seems to be about transition, and could we soften it over three years. Transition is always difficult. We've laid out a route to do it, and those are the regulations. We think what we are trying to do is the right way and the FIA can't dilute its goals. Either we do this and we show courage and resolve, or we allow ourselves to get compromised until things get diluted.

Q. Do you believe that the problems the manufacturer teams have in dealing with the transition can be sorted out in the next three weeks?

TP: We are optimistic. If the attitude is right, then anything can be done.

Q. So you see no problem in the differences between the teams' resistance to a two-tier championship, and your push to get them all in the budget cap, getting settled?

TP: I'm optimistic. Whenever change has been required the teams have cried Armageddon: Parc Ferme, engine freeze, V10s to V8, KERS... On each occasion there were those who claimed that F1 would fall apart. These experiences tend to make the FIA more resilient to all the hysteria. People don't like change.

Q. So the crux isn't where the budget cap is as such, it is simply how we get there and dealing with the transition?

FIA trusts cap deal can be reached

The FIA is optimistic that a deal can be agreed with teams to move forward with plans for a budget cap in Formula 1 next year, but has warned that it will not compromise simply because of the 'hysteria' caused by threats to quit the sport.

Ahead of a meeting between representatives of the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) and Max Mosley in the next few days, the FIA's technical advisor Tony Purnell has made it clear that the FIA is not in the mood to back down over its £40 million rules.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT in an exclusive interview, Purnell said he was confident that talks he held with teams in Barcelona last weekend, plus moves by Bernie Ecclestone, were pointing towards a solution to the situation being found.

"I'm optimistic," explained Purnell. "Whenever change has been required the teams have cried Armageddon: Parc Ferme, engine freeze, V10s to V8, KERS... On each occasion there were those who claimed that F1 would fall apart. These experiences tend to make the FIA more resilient to all the hysteria. People don't like change."

Toyota and Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz said at the Spanish Grand Prix that they would not lodge entries to the 2010 world championship unless rules were changed - and hinted other teams would follow their lead.

Although there have been suggestions that teams could be appeased by raising the current £40 million level for the budget cap, Purnell has said that the FIA is reluctant to do so.

He claims that moving the figure much higher will hinder the chances of new teams coming into F1 next year - something which the FIA has targeted as being vital for the future health of the sport.

"The thing is a tremendous balancing act," he said. AUTOSPORT understands, however, that the teams may be willing to accept the £40 million limit if some concerns about the policing of the budget caps are alleviated.

Sources suggest that some outfits do not want outside accountants looking at their books. One possible way to solve this problem, which Ecclestone has already proposed, is for the task of checking teams' expenditure will be carried out not by the FIA but by the team's own auditors - or totally independent accountants.

Should all the current teams sign up for the budget cap, then that will remove the possibility of a two-tier formula – something which the manufacturers have deemed unacceptable.

Ferrari board to discuss F1 future

Ferrari's board of directors will discuss the Italian squad's future in Formula 1 tomorrow, the team announced on Monday.

Amid growing tension between the teams and the FIA over the introduction of a budget cap for 2010, Ferrari said in a statement on Monday its board will analyse the current situation and its future involvement in F1.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and FIA president Max Mosley have been at loggerheads over the introduction of the budget cap, which the Italian reckons could damage the sport.

Mosley said earlier this month that Formula 1 could survive without Ferrari, the only team who has competed in every championship since 1950.

Lorenzo keen to make up for Jerez

Jorge Lorenzo is confident that he can make up for his Spanish Grand Prix error when the MotoGP championship resumes at Le Mans this weekend.

The Yamaha rider followed up his Motegi win with a staggering pole lap at Jerez, only to fall back to fourth in the race and then crash out.

That meant he fell from the lead of the standings to third place, 24 points behind his series-leading team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo believes it is now vital that he gets a good result in France to get his title bid back on course.

"Le Mans is the next stop and the first after my crash in Jerez," said the Spaniard. "I was very sad about what happened there but now it is another story, everything begins again and I must try to do things step by step.

"The team and I need to improve after Jerez and main target is to get back on the podium. I am fit and I like Le Mans."

He said his performance in France last year, when he raced with a broken ankle after a Shanghai accident but still shrugged off practice and qualifying crashes, and an awful start, to come through to second, gave him a lot of confidence for the race.

"I have had some difficult times there, and last year wasn't easy because I crashed twice during the weekend, but in the end the result was good," said Lorenzo.

"I've been on the podium in each category and I will remember forever the incredible (all) Yamaha podium of last year. It was amazing. I can see now Valentino, Colin (Edwards) and I enjoying the moment with all the Yamaha people smiling. I hope this year we can repeat that moment.

"I will also remember that podium because it's the only one where I was on crutches!"

His team manager Daniele Romagnoli is also optimistic that Lorenzo can get over the Jerez disappointment with a great result in France.

"Le Mans was very good for us last year, especially considering that Jorge was not in great physical condition," he said.

"Jerez was a great disappointment but now we're keen to move on to France and hopefully we will be able to forget the bad memory from Spain. Le Mans generally suits our Yamaha very well so we hope that we can make the most of it."

Ducati pushes to help struggling riders

Ducati is to reshuffle its engineers, change its electronics and recruit Troy Bayliss for testing as it tries to get all its riders on the pace.

While Casey Stoner took victory in Qatar, and Pramac Racing's rookie Mika Kallio has impressed greatly, second factory rider Nicky Hayden, Kallio's team-mate Niccolo Canepa and returnee Sete Gibernau (with the new Hernando team) have all struggled for form.

To address this, Hayden's former engineer Cristhian Pupulin has moved to a new role analysing data from all five bikes, with Juan Martinez returning to Ducati after a period at Kawasaki to take his place leading Hayden's crew.

In an additional measure, Ducati's triple World Superbike champion Bayliss is to join test rider Vittoriano Guareschi at Mugello this week to work on developments, and changes have been made to the bike's electronics for this weekend's Le Mans race to try and make the bike more consistent and help the new riders adapt.

Stoner has often been Ducati's only competitive rider since the start of the 800cc era in 2007, and team boss Livio Suppo said this situation had to change.

"After the race at Jerez, which was fantastic for Casey but very difficult for Nicky, we had a few meetings to analyse our technical and organisational structure, with the goal of improving the all-round performances of our riders," he said.

"We came to the conclusion that after starting the season with not all of the Ducati riders able to match their positive form in winter testing, maybe this is the right time to introduce some new technical ideas in terms of the electronics as well as boosting our track presence in order to provide all of the Ducati riders with better support.

"The GP9 is still a very young machine and for the first time in MotoGP we have five bikes on the grid. For these two reasons we have decided that we need to concentrate more on co-ordinating all the data that we gather at each race in order to provide more direction for development.

"As well as changing the structure of the team we have some electronic updates and Cristhian Pupulin will be able to completely dedicate his time to the important role of co-ordination, which we need to continue to develop the GP9."

Hayden also hopes the changes will help him get up to speed.

"I think it should help me and all the Ducati riders," he said.

"I believe that with Cristhian more freed up from some of the normal work as crew chief he can use his expertise more and focus on really working on the issues I am having with the bike and help give us a better direction and give more info to the factory.

"So to fill his spot we will bring in Juan, who has put up some solid results in MotoGP. He has already worked in Ducati and speaks good English and Italian so he was a good match."

The American praised Ducati's support, and admitted that the onus was now on him to raise his level.

"I can't say I don't have enough good manpower behind me and it has been encouraging to see Ducati trying everything and working so hard to help get me in a situation to deliver," said Hayden.

"The team is very important in our sport but it is really up to the rider to do his part and make the difference, so I hope I can step up and do my part soon."

Suzuki boosted by practice alteration

Loris Capirossi believes the increase in practice time from this weekend's French Grand Prix will make a crucial difference to Suzuki's form.

Suzuki flew in winter testing but has yet to show similar speed in the races, with the team discovering that the bike works best in a narrow set-up window that it is not always possible to perfect during the short grand prix weekend sessions.

That problem was exacerbated by the removal of Friday morning practice this year and the shortening of all other sessions to 45 minutes.

The riders had called for a 45-minute Friday morning session to be reinstated, but instead the FIM has announced that the remaining two practice periods plus qualifying will be restored to their former one-hour length from Le Mans onwards, giving an extra 45 minutes of running across the weekend.

"We now have a bit longer to work on the bike with the increased practice sessions and hopefully we can iron-out the few things that we need to make us more competitive," said Capirossi, who was regularly in the top three in testing but has not finished above sixth yet in the opening rounds.

"I have said before that I have been disappointed with the results so far this season and I want to be able to show just what the GSV-R and the whole team are capable of.

"I know that we can be closer to the front and challenging the top guys, we just seem to need that bit of luck and things to go our way for a change."

His team-mate Chris Vermeulen, who won at Le Mans in the wet 2007 race, is also determined to show better form in France.

"I managed a fifth there last year and I will certainly be looking to better that this time out," he said.

"We have had a tough start to the season and the results have certainly not gone our way for one reason or another, but we need to learn from what has happened and make sure we come out stronger through the rest of the season - starting with Le Mans this weekend."

Stoner: Hayden needs confidence

Casey Stoner believes his team-mate Nicky Hayden will get up to speed on the Ducati as soon as he regains confidence after recent crashes.

Like all Stoner's previous Ducati team-mates, Hayden is currently struggling for pace and has been significantly slower than his fellow former world champion.

But Hayden had started to show better form in testing only to lose momentum following a massive crash in qualifying at Losail, and then a subsequent first lap tangle with Yuki Takahashi in Japan.

Although Hayden could only finish 15th, 50 seconds behind third-placed Stoner, in last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, the Australian is confident his team-mate has the potential to get to grips with the Ducati GP9 once he gets over the accidents.

"He's struggled with confidence of late," said Stoner. "These last two races have been a disaster for him, and not really his fault.

"He made the mistake in Qatar and crashed. For sure that's a big blow to your confidence and then of course Takahashi took him out. There are maybe just a few things he needs to get over."

Stoner thinks that without the accidents, Hayden would be much closer to his times.

"We've seen him be very competitive up in the top five (in testing) and getting more comfortable on the bike, and then those things hit, and that put a backwards step in his stride, "he said. "Hopefully we can see him start to bounce back."

Stoner's 2007 Ducati team-mate Loris Capirossi began the year a long way adrift but eventually acclimatised to the bike and was able to win in Japan and rise to seventh in the championship.

Capirossi then left for Suzuki, and his replacement Marco Melandri fared even worse alongside Stoner. The Italian only finished in the top ten three times all year, was a lowly 17th in the final championship standings, and agreed an early end to his multi-year deal.

MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi is predicting a tough, season-long battle to retain his crown.

The Italian scored his first win of the 2009 season at the Spanish Grand Prix last Sunday, moving to the top of the standings.

Rossi was the third winner, and the third championship leader, in as many races, with Ducati's Casey Stoner and Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo having been on top earlier on.

"In three races we have had three different leaders in the championship: Casey, Jorge and me," said Rossi. "So we need to stay concentrated at the maximum and make no mistakes.

"We have to try to win when it's possible and try to arrive on the podium anyway when we have problems. I have already 65 points. I'm in front of Casey, who I think is the most difficult rival. But also Pedrosa and Lorenzo are not far away either.

"I think it will be very tough to the end. Le Mans is very different to Jerez, but I have good memories because in all history Yamaha has been very fast at Le Mans. Last year I was very fast."

The seven-time champion now leads Stoner by nine points, with Lorenzo and Honda's Dani Pedrosa on 41.

Lorenzo: Slow pace worse than crash

Jorge Lorenzo said that his lack of pace in the Spanish Grand Prix was more disappointing than the crash that put him out of his home race.

The 21-year-old Spaniard put his Yamaha on pole position at Jerez, but made a bad start and ran fourth for most of the race before losing the front end of his M1 at the Angel Nieto bend while in pursuit of Casey Stoner's Ducati.

Prior to his accident, Lorenzo had been unable to get within half a second of his team-mate Valentino Rossi's lap times after he failed to set his bike up correctly for the track conditions.

"Unfortunately today the temperature meant that our setting did not work in the same way [as in qualifying] and at the moment we don't understand why," said Lorenzo. "This is really more disappointing than the actual crash."

Lorenzo admitted that the cause of the crash, which came on lap 22 after he had reduced a four-second deficit to Stoner to a little under a second, was purely rider error.

"Fourth position wouldn't have been so bad but when you're in front of your fans, at home with so much adrenalin on the bike of course you try to do the maximum," he added.

"I could see that the podium was possible and maybe the right thing would have been to go more gently and not push so hard in that moment, but I always want to do my best. Then I made a mistake and I threw all my good work away."

His failure to score points meant that Lorenzo dropped from the lead of the championship to third, 24 points behind winner Rossi.

De Puniet feels he has proved a point

Randy de Puniet believes he showed what he can really do with his fourth place at Jerez.

The Frenchman has a reputation as an excellent qualifier, but has often missed out on good results due to race day errors. However this weekend he qualified fifth and then rode consistently to fourth position, his best result since joining the LCR Honda team last year.

"It was a perfect weekend for me and the team," said de Puniet. "When I enjoy the bike I can go really fast and people can see that today. This was the best bike I had since I have been riding with Lucio's team. It was very easy to ride and I had fun.

"I made a good start and when (Andrea) Dovizioso overtook me I remain concentrated trying to keep my position. After few laps he made a mistake and I came back to the fifth place. Then, at the end, the final result of the race gave me the fourth place overall.

"I am very satisfied about the work we did during this week end as we struggled a bit here during the pre-season test."

De Puniet said he was determined to ensure that the Jerez result was not a one-off, but was also keen to keep his expectations for his home race in a fortnight under control.

"Honestly I think that if we keep this pace for the rest of the season we can be very competitive," he said. "However we keep our feet on the ground as we must restart from zero in Le Mans. I absolutely want to finish all the races to get as many points as possible."

Pedrosa lauds 'unbelievable' podium

Dani Pedrosa described his second place at the Spanish Grand Prix as an 'unbelievable' achievement following the injury problems that have plagued the Repsol Honda rider over the winter.

Pedrosa, who started second on the grid alongside countryman Jorge Lorenzo, made a perfect getaway to lead into the first corner, and held the advantage until Valentino Rossi passed him into the Angel Nieto corner with 11 laps remaining.

"I really wanted to win, but I knew it would be very difficult because Valentino was already very fast on Friday. So I just tried to do my race and see what the result was at the end," he said.

"Coming from all those problems we had [over the winter], it's still unbelievable for me to be on the podium. My race was very good and I'm happy."

Pedrosa believes that Rossi's victory was no surprise, despite the Italian qualifying his Yamaha on the second row.

"Maybe he was going slowly to try and not make other people see how fast he was," added Pedrosa, who moved up from fifth to equal third in the world championship as a result of his podium finish - 24 points behind Rossi.

Stoner: Third better than Qatar win

Casey Stoner said that his third place in the Spanish Grand Prix was a better result than his victory at the season-opening race in Qatar.

The Ducati rider's result was the first time he had made it onto the podium at Jerez in any of the grand prix classes, and also the first time the Italian manufacturer was on the rostrum at the track since 2006.

"To me this feels bigger than victory in Qatar," said the 2007 world champion. "It was a really good day for us. We put in a lot of effort and the team tried everything they could to get the bike working well. It was definitely good enough for a podium."

The Australian had been suffering from issues with his front tyre during the race, and feared that he would be easy meat for Jorge Lorenzo when the polesitter closed up on him late in the race before crashing.

"We just took a gamble with the setting to try and make it rideable enough to do the race and feel comfortable," Stoner explained. "At the beginning of the race we got a fantastic start and were up there with everyone.

"Then I started to lose the front at a few corners and Valentino (Rossi) came past. I tried to stay with me as long as possible to see if he could take me up to Dani (Pedrosa). But I lost the front a few too many times and just decided to stay ahead of Jorge.

"Then he started catching me and I thought it was game over and the podium was almost gone. I decided to fight as long as I could, until the dying stages at least, and in those laps almost once every lap in different corners I was almost losing the front end.

"So I was almost ready to give up third and back off the pace, and Jorge crashed."

He admitted that he would never have predicted a podium finish today given his record at the track, even after he had qualified on the outside of the front row.

"I wasn't very nervous going into it because we didn't think we had much of a chance of getting on the podium," Stoner said. "We knew that Valentino, Dani and Jorge had higher pace than us.

"After all these years, this is my first time on the podium at Jerez, so it's been a long time coming. I've had a couple of opportunities but made mistakes and things like that."

Stoner's result moved him up to second place in the world championship, 11 points behind race winner Valentino Rossi.

Valentino Rossi declared himself delighted with this Yamaha's race set-up after charging from behind to take victory in the Spanish Grand Prix.

The world champion had predicted that he would be unable to fight for the win having struggled in qualifying, but his Yamaha was more competitive in race conditions and he came through from fourth to beat Dani Pedrosa to first place - taking the points lead in the process.

"It was a great race, very fun, but also physical," said Rossi.

"My bike worked very well today, I'm so fast with a sliding tyre, and I was able to arrive with Dani, and overtake. There was another nine or ten laps to the end, so I stayed concentrated because I knew it was possible to get the victory.

"Winning here in Jerez is fantastic. It's always a great pleasure."

He admitted that he had remained sceptical about his chances of victory in the early stages, as he ran a quiet fourth at first, behind Pedrosa, Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo.

"From the beginning, in the first few laps, I was quite far behind, especially from Dani and Casey (Stoner)," Rossi said. "After that I came back and had a great fight with Casey.

"When I was able to arrive in second place, Dani was already a little bit more than one second ahead.

"I know that in that situation Dani is always very difficult to catch. So I tried to push hard and stay concentrated. There was one part of the race where I didn't gain a lot, but lap by lap I was able to improve my pace and stay very consistent."

Rossi takes first win of 2009 in Spain

World champion Valentino Rossi hunted down and passed Dani Pedrosa to secure his first win of 2009 in the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez.

Casey Stoner took his first ever Jerez podium in third, with Jorge Lorenzo losing the points lead to Rossi thanks to a late crash.

After only qualifying fourth, Rossi had declared that it would be "impossible" to win today's race, but changes made overnight allowed him to top the warm-up and then march forward when the grand prix commenced.

The Italian overtook his Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo, who had made a slow start from pole, on the second lap, and then quickly caught Stoner, getting around the Ducati on lap seven after a tough battle.

Pedrosa had grabbed the lead off the line and edged away, so took longer for Rossi to catch, but by half-distance the Honda had the Yamaha on its tail. A pass at the back hairpin on lap 16 saw Rossi take the lead, and once ahead there was no stopping him.

As Rossi pulled away to win by three seconds, Stoner drifted away from Pedrosa and came under pressure from Lorenzo - until the Spaniard's race ended with a low-side crash just four laps from home.

Randy de Puniet rode an excellent race to take fourth for LCR Honda - his best result since joining the team from Kawasaki at the end of 2007. The Frenchman held his own from the start and had a lonely run once Honda's Andrea Dovizioso had slid off the road while racing him early on.

Marco Melandri continued Hayate Kawasaki's fine form by taking fifth following a massive battle with Loris Capirossi (Suzuki) and Colin Edwards (Tech 3 Yamaha). The recovering Dovizioso carved through from 16th to join this group by the end.

Gresini Honda's Toni Elias and Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen completed the top ten, with Yuki Takahashi running strongly for Scot Honda at first before drifting back to 12th behind Sete Gibernau (Hernando Ducati).

Gibernau was the second-best Ducati at the flag, as works rider Nicky Hayden had an unhappy run to 16th and Mika Kallio retired his Pramac version with brake problems.

Q and A with Bradley Smith

It has been a long time coming, but in his 50th grand prix start, Bradley Smith finally became a 125cc winner at Jerez today.

Afterwards he told AUTOSPORT how much it meant to him - and how it has transformed his world championship hopes.

Q: How do you feel?

Bradley Smith: I can't even explain it at the moment. It's just crazy. You watch these races before in years gone by when people win by 15-20 seconds and you wonder how it's possible. So for me to do it today, to keep on seeing those seconds go up on the pit board, words can't describe it because the bike was working so well and I was just keeping my head down lap after lap.

It was a freaky race really. The wind started to get worse and worse towards the end so I was thankful to have such a big gap. Also the fifth gear problem I had with a couple of laps to go played in as well. I guess it was just meant to be my day today. I'll take that one, thank you very much, and go in into the rest of the season now with my confidence pretty high.

Q: What happened with fifth gear?

BS: I just couldn't use it. It just wasn't working.

Q: And you nearly crashed?

BS: I went into corner number four and the bike almost switched off and then back on, and I went pretty sideways. So I was pretty lucky to stay on. It was a lucky race for me.

Q: So did you have to go from fourth to sixth then?

BS: Yes. Fourth... fifth-sixth... just like that. It wasn't easy.

Q: Have you cracked this business now?

BS: It's not a given. Hopefully the 1/50 ratio will soon dwindle down. That's the plan anyway. It's just one of those races where everything went my way. Right from the start I was able to ride my own lines and my own race. This is a huge confidence booster. I always knew I could do it. It was just a question of actually getting over the line first, and always something seemed to be in my way. Now I've done it and I couldn't be happier.

Q: It's an amazing transformation from two weeks ago?

BS: The thing is there were three dry days, and when you have that at a circuit where you've done so many laps in testing, you can be on it from the word go. We went under the lap record today so the pace me and my team-mate were able to set at the beginning was very fast. If it hadn't been for the problem with the bike I think it would have continued right to the end.

I think the extra 20 minutes in the session at Le Mans will help us a lot in terms of set-up time and more time on the bike. It was all good and I had no problems at all until the final seven laps of that race. I just thought 'please, not today.' And we got the job done.

Q: Is the title on?

BS: After Japan I was disappointed. It took something quite special to pick me up. To be 26 points behind after only two races, I know it's a long season, but you have a lot of work to do. This just shows you how quickly everything can turn around. I'm only one point behind now and the chase is certainly on.

Q: And the last few laps?

BS: When you've been in the zone for over 40 minutes, the final two laps don't make a difference. You think about every possible scenario you might have anyway. With the problem with the bike I had to concentrate really hard on everything else, so I didn't really have time to think about anything else.

Q: So it probably did you a favour then?

BS: In some ways, yes. In others, not at all.

Q: Will you have a different attitude now?

BS: No. Because I've been searching for, and fighting for this victory for the last year now, and the will and the desire was always there, it was just a case of doing it. So now it's not a case of chasing the victory, it's a case of chasing the second one.

Randy de Puniet is happy to be fifth on the grid at Jerez and will be happy with a top ten result at round three.

Following his frustrating 2008 season, which resulted in several crashes for the LCR Honda team, Randy de Puniet wants to ride steadily at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España and register another top ten result - after his solid start to the year so far.

Recording his best qualifying result since Australia last season, De Puniet as put himself fifth on the grid at Jerez, as the only satellite rider on the front two rows.

Having lapped 0.873s behind poleman Jorge Lorenzo on his Playboy sponsored RC212V in the Spanish sunshine, he commented, “The practices started very well for us yesterday. Immediately I had a good feeling with the bike and we have been improving things during the weekend so far. I know our set-up is almost perfect because I’m just behind the factory riders on the grid.”

“I have also been fast on race tyres so I am very confident for tomorrow. I expect a very good race and to start on the second row at this track is very important.”

Stating his straightforward hopes for Sunday’s MotoGP contest, he added, “If I can finish around seventh, eighth or ninth I will be happy because my target from the beginning of the year has been to consistently finish in the top ten in the first three or four races.”

De Puniet has thus far finished 10th and 11th respectively in Qatar and Japan and will go in search of more points tomorrow as he aims to move up the general standings from his current 11th place overall.

Valentino Rossi believes gusts of wind were slowing him down at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España on Saturday.

Valentino Rossi looked like the man to beat on Friday at Jerez but he was unable to replicate a similar pace on Saturday, struggling to find the same feeling in windy conditions.

The reigning World Champion put in his best lap at the end of the QP session but was unable to knock Casey Stoner off the outside of the front row and had to settle for starting at the head of the second row for Sunday’s third race of the season.

“I’m a bit unhappy because we had a few problems and it actually hasn’t been such a good day, it was also very windy which made it more difficult. Yesterday we were very fast from the start and we hoped to keep going like this today but we have lost some feeling and now I can’t ride and push how I want to. At the moment I am not happy with the setting for the race and we need to work hard to understand the situation and try to improve it because we must be stronger tomorrow. Now we will make a long meeting and try to find some solution to try for the warm-up tomorrow.”

Team Manager Davide Brivio

“Missing out on the first row means that tomorrow’s race will be a bit more difficult in the early stages. Our race pace and rhythm are not so bad but we still need to make some adjustments because our potential is a lot better than this. We have to make Valentino more comfortable so that he can ride how he wants to, so now our engineers will study the data and look to come up with something to improve the setting.”

A rather too sensational start to the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season saw Sturla Fagerhaug claim victory even though he crashed heavily and was half a lap behind the leading pack.

The 17 year old Norwegian benefited from a restart following a 2 rider crash and pulled through to win an incredible 6 lap race 2 ahead of Mathew Scholtz and Danny Kent.

It was 16 year old South African Scholtz who rocketed away from the initial start into a 5 second lead only to run off the track when the extremely blustery wind took his front wheel away. He regained the track to cross the line 8th as the race was stopped. Featuring strongly in the first race and thus lining up for the restart in 2nd place the 15 year old Briton Kent was in the hunt for the win again after the restart.

Fagerhaug lined up at the back of the grid but with Scholtz unable to make the break-away that he did first time the battle that the South African had with 16 year old Frenchman Nelson Major and the rest of a 10 man lead pack slowed the race pace. That was all the help that Fagerhaug needed and he charged through.

Outbraking 2 or 3 riders a time into some corners Fagerhaug was unstoppable and finally stole the lead on the last lap. "When I crashed in the first day I thought it was going to be the worst day of my life. I couldn't believe it when the race was restarted but you never want to see anyone get hurt so none of us were happy about it."

"I'd made such a mess of the first start when I let out the clutch and the rear tyre slid sideways I just made sure I didn't do it again. I was determined to get some good points and I saw the pack was not getting away. I started to realise that I really could get a good result but I never thought of winning it until the last lap when I saw I could do it," concluded Fagerhaug.

It was the nasty fall of 15 year old Briton Harry Stafford that stopped the first race. He was right in the battle for the lead when the bike slid suddenly and highsided him right in front of the following pack, the front wheel of Florian Marino's bike clipped the fallen rider and the 15 year old Frenchman also went down. Marino walked away but Stafford was taken by ambulance to hospital with a broken collarbone and severe concussion.

Scholtz had good reason not to try and repeat his attempted run-away in the restarted race. "The wind got under my bike and pushed the front wheel away in the first race. It was even worse after the restart and I had to make sure it didn't happen again. I couldn't believe it when Sturla caught us. One minute I looked behind and Danny was there then suddenly on the last lap... it was Sturla."

Scholtz actually thought that the board said it was the second to last lap as did Kent. "I thought there was another lap to go," said the Briton. "Still it was a great race and I'll just have to see if I can go and win the race tomorrow."

Fourth man home and strongly featuring throughout the two races was 14 year old Swede Alex Kristiansson. "I enjoyed myself so much, I really had fun. I wanted to get on the podium but it didn't work out on the last lap, I'll have to do it tomorrow."

Similarly hoping for a better result in Sunday's race, pole man Daijiro Hiura ended Saturday with no points as he crashed after pulling through to second following a mediocre start in the first race. "The wind was so hard, it just took my front wheel away," explained the 14 year old Japanese who was unable to restart because of the damage to his KTM RC125.

It was not the best qualifying practice ever for the Pramac Racing team at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España on Saturday, as Mika Kallio and Niccolò Canepa respectively concluded 17th and 18th at Jerez.

“Several things didn’t go in the right direction today. We modified the bike many times without any luck. The only thing to do at the moment is analyze the data to understand in which direction we have to go. The track conditions were different compared to March, but we didn’t expect to be so far behind. Tomorrow it will need to be another comeback race for us.”

Niccolò Canepa -18th

“It went a bit better today even if with the race tyres I still need some more confidence. We have got closer to the other riders and this gives us a morale boost for the race. My learning period is going well and with patience we improve practice after practice. I want to thank my team for the great work they are doing for me.”

An exciting MotoGP qualifying session at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España concluded with Motegi racewinner and series leader Jorge Lorenzo on pole in Jerez.

The man of the moment in MotoGP Jorge Lorenzo delighted the home crowd at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in beautiful conditions on Saturday afternoon, as he repeated his 2008 pole for the Gran Premio bwin.com de España.

In stark contrast to the appalling weather at Motegi a week ago which saw qualifying cancelled, the growing Spanish crowd at the Andalusian track were bathed in some typical Iberian sunshine as the MotoGP riders put on a great show on their 800cc prototypes.

Lorenzo and his big Spanish rival Dani Pedrosa did battle for pole position during the 45 minute session, with the Fiat Yamaha rider eventually emerging on top with a 1’38.933 hot lap on the 18th of his 21 turns of the track.

Saturday morning’s fastest rider Pedrosa again demonstrated his improving form and fitness on his Repsol Honda RC212V machine, lapping just 0.051s behind his young compatriot.

Ducati Marlboro’s Casey Stoner, who won the BMW M Award at Jerez in March’s Official MotoGP Test, was around half a second behind Lorenzo with his best effort putting him third on the grid at one of his least favoured tracks.

Friday’s top man, World Champion Valentino Rossi could not match his championship rivals and after a modest Saturday morning free practice outing the Italian qualified off the front row for the first time this year in fourth place.

A good effort from Randy de Puniet saw him as the top satellite equipped qualifier in fifth place for the LCR Honda team, whilst the second line of the grid was rounded off by Rizla Suzuki’s Loris Capirossi - who made sure four different manufacturers are represented on the front two rows.

The third row, meanwhile, features Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) and Toni Elias (San Carlo Honda Gresini), who will all be in the hunt for good points on Sunday.

Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) was tenth fastest, with Sete Gibernau (Grupo Francisco Hernando) twelfth and 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) down in 16th.

San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Alex de Angelis crashed at the end of the session and qualified in 15th place, but was not reported to be injured.

Japanese factory chosen as single engine supplier for new class, whilst practice sessions for 2009 also undergo modification.

The initial engine supplier for the Moto2 class, the 600cc prototype World Championship series which will run for the first time in 2010, has been confirmed as Japanese manufacturer Honda. After receiving offers from various potential suppliers, the Permanent Bureau of FIM President Mr Vito Ippolito and Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta made the unanimous decision to give the tender to the company.

The first Moto2 engine will run at over 150hp, housed inside chassis of the teams’ choosing. The prototype bikes will make their entrance to the World Championship against the current crop of 250cc machinery, which will run alongside the class in an arrangement similar to that made for the 500cc/MotoGP switch in 2002.

Rules changes regarding the 2009 season were also announced on Saturday at Jerez, with the duration of all MotoGP Free Practice and Qualifying sessions to be extended from 45 minutes to 1 hour as of the upcoming Grand Prix de France. The new standard event schedule will now be as follows:

Chief Mechanic for countless stars over the years, Rámon Forcada has seen all manner of premier class machinery used by the likes of Alex Barros, John Kocinski, Carlos Checa and Casey Stoner, amongst others. Spaniard drives MotoGP Safety Car round Jerez circuit.

Jorge Lorenzo knows the Circuito de Jerez like the back of his hand from his time racing at the track in all three categories. The Spaniard won twice at his home circuit in 250cc and was last year’s poleman in his first MotoGP visit.

Fiat Yamaha’s World Championship leader showed the motogp.com cameras around in a guided tour this weekend, behind the wheel of the MotoGP Safety Car. Along the way Lorenzo stopped to give his insight into the key corners.

Spaniards Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo were the fastest two MotoGP riders on Saturday morning at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España.

Following his modest start to the Jerez weekend on Friday, when he lapped down in tenth position and was more than 1.5s off the pace, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa stepped up his rhythm at the southern Spanish track on Saturday morning - to lap fastest in the MotoGP free practice 2 run.

The surprise Motegi podium finisher demonstrated his competitiveness and his improving fitness with a best time of 1’39.422, which was almost two seconds better than his Friday pace.

Fractionally behind his compatriot and rival on the timesheet, Fiat Yamaha’s championship leading youngster Jorge Lorenzo trailed Pedrosa by just 0.054s, with things shaping up nicely for the home fans ahead of afternoon qualifying at 2.05pm – which should take place in similarly good weather conditions to the morning outing.

Also in the Saturday morning top five were Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro), Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda).

Behind former team-mate Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Whorld Champion Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) lapped discreetly in seventh place, unable to match his own best time from Friday.

Eighth fastest participant Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) was also unable to repeat his Friday pace, whilst compatriot Marco Melandri (Hayate Racing) and a much improved Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) rounded out the top ten.
